For anyone who doesn’t want the hefty high magic (but, um, for real tho, why not?), the short story based in the world is a wonderfully poetic sidebar that reveals more about Auri without spoiling any plot points: The Slow Regard of Silent Things is one of my favorite novellas EVAH.
Speaking of novellas, I read Every Heart A Doorway by Seanan McGuire — and also the three novellas that followed because seriously yum — which is basically what it would be like for Alice, back in the real world, post-Wonderland. There’s this school for children who “find a doorway” and visit another world, and then come back a little less themselves — or maybe a little more so. And then there was a murder or two.
